A Spare tyre permanantly mounted - Could it ever have caught on?

1933 Indy 500, Luther Johnson, who along with two co-drivers finished 10th in this Studebaker. The extra tire was an experiment to see if it would get the car back to the pits after a blow-out. The spare tire never was raced, and only briefly practiced.
