Day 34 - 28 Chev Ute Restoration (15th August 2015)

Good day in the shed, fitted the replacement rear cross member, which went in pretty easy.

No rust here.

The unbrako heads will be filled to look like an original rivet

The four nuts at the rear of the chassis will be the only ones visible from under the car. All other cross members will have the head facing under the car.

These will be hidden by the fuel tank

3/8 x 3/4 UNF Button Head Socket Screw, with a Conical nut on the other side

This cross member is not going anywhere

Next job was removing the front cross member. With 4 loose rivets and significant pitting from the radiator, it was not a hard decision to remove and replace with this rust and corrosion free spare. The dark areas are medium to heavy rust.

Very nice replacement that spent a month in the molasses bath

Overnight rustbuster will be pickling away at the rust that was under the front cross member.

Zinc Chromate painted over rust........ why?  Will need to be taken back to bare metal.

This space or "hole" will be filled in with the front cross member within the next day or so. A fair bit of work replacing these cross members, but the peace of mind factor will be very strong.
